Dimonika Village - Dimonika Biosphere Reserve - Day Tour from Pointe Noire
Dimonika is a village that was created due to the rampant mining of the area early in the 1940s. The area is renowned for being exploited for gold since this time and almost every inch has been extensively mined for gold since then, especially within a 6 km radius which was said to have been the "gold"en area. Thus Dimonika village was created. The history is more than rich here and the village has this wonderful charm and incredibly warm people.
Aside from being famously known for gold mining (with some still panning for gold to this day individually or in big teams with machines) and its history, the village is a beautiful spot located in the centre of Mayombe. The village is in the heart of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve created to protect over 1300 km2 of pristine rainforest an savannah.
The Dimonika Biosphere Reserve offers a wide variety of fauna including elephants, antelope, gorillas, chimpanzees and much more. The reserve is mainly covered by a dense rainforest, however, there are areas where there is a bit of a break in the forest and you aren't completely enclosed by the natural forest canopy that many dream of!
There has been a great push in the last few years by some locals and foreigners to bring ecotourism to the village and area. This small group truly understands that the village has plenty to offer. It is both a history buff and nature lovers haven. Dimonika village is really one of a kind and almost momentarily from the second you get here, you feel this. Though the ecotourism push has seen more visitors than previous years, Dimonika remains very much off the tourist trail (as does the entire Congo) so you get the feeling of having the entire village and forest to yourself - watch for the snakes in the forest!
Itinerary:
This morning you will be picked up from your accommodation in Pointe Noire right around 6am. The drive from the city today is approximately 3 hours through incredible scenery and has you arriving in Dimonika around 9am.
As you arrive in Dimonika this morning you will prepare right away for your hike in the forest, about half an hour after our arrival.
The duration of your visit today can be up to you as long as you are on the road back to Pointe Noire by 4pm.As you arrive in Pointe Noire, you will be transferred back to your accommodation for the evening.
