ORIGINAL 15 DAY WILD BONOBOS TRIP

Day 1: Arrival in Kinshasa, airport assistance, transfer to hotel and briefing and orientation

Day 2: After breakfast, transfer to the airport for our flight to Basankusu.

We travel with Kin Avia with a Belgian pilot (our buddy) and we stay the night in tents for the preparation of the trip.

Day 3,4,5: we arrive at destination in the middle of day 5. In total, we have to travel between 30 and 40 hours on the water. We leave early in the morning, after breakfast ; have a small break at noon for lunch ; and we’ll stop around +/- 4 pm for our camp and to prepare our diner. We stay overnight in small villages, with the agreement of the chief and buy our food on the local markets. The Maringa River is between 100 and 200 meter wide, and has a lot of sandbanks. The Lomako River is between 5 and 15 meters wide, forest everywhere on both sides, a fast water flow, and a lot of obstacles. Here we have to be careful so a realistic party and timetable has been assembled.

Day 6,7,8,9: Now we enter into the forest. To find the Bonobos, we’ll have to leave the camp at night, to arrive early in the morning where they pass the night, high in the trees, and we’ll stay till they are awake.

Besides the Bonobos, we also can find: Dryas Monkey (Cercopithecus Dryas) Tholan’s Red Colobus (Piliocolobus Tholloni) Golden-Bellied Mangabey (CercocebusChrysogaster)Black Mangabey (Lophocebus Aterrimus) Allen’s Swamp Monkey (AllenopithecusNigroviridis) Angolan Colobus (Colobus Angolensis) Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Buffalo (Syncerus Caffer) Bongo (Tragelaphus Euryceros) African Golden Cat (Felis Aurata) Leopard (Panthera Pardus) For birding, the region has more than 400 different species with a high density of the“Congo peafowl” (Afropavo Congensis)

Day 10,11,12,13: Return to Basankusu. The people from the villages we meet on the way are from the Mongo tribes. During the last years, there was a migration of people from the Ngombe tribe, really good hunters. Luckily for the wildlife, ammunition isn’t easy to find.*

Day 14: In Basankusu, a day off, a day of rest, and a day when we’ll visit the town and the office of AWF, an NGO where the only other foreigners for hundreds of miles can be found.

Day 15: Flight to Kinshasa, Transfer to the Hotel 3 stars (we usually use Leon.) Transfer to the airport and farewell (or you can extend to stay an extra day or 2 and fly later depending on your schedule.)

“Tele Expedition - What a corker!I'd seen lac Tele on the map and decided it was something worth walking to. It's in the middle of no where, lac Tele national park is famous for having the highest density of gorillas in the Congo basin and the swampy terrain necessary to get to the lake sounded like a true challenge.I later found Congo Travel and Tours were running trips to Lac Tele and got in touch. Chris, the director, immediately got back to me with all transport and logistic details I needed. I was in Brazzaville at the time and he set me up with his lead guide, Omar Badji.Having travelled from the U.K. to Congo-Brazza by motorbike I had some understanding of organisational difficulties in Africa, however I couldn't have done Lac Tele without Chris and Badjie. They know all the major players in the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and, importantly, Boha village. Boha, with its central chieftain, melee of influential families and seeming autonomy was one of the highlights of my trip. However gaining permission to visit the Lac from the chieftain ("The Notable") and appeasing the different families is not a joke. Chris and Badjie ensured that I had everything I needed to ensure things ran smoothly. My WCS guide (Sylvester Ebethas, a native from Boha) also acted as an effective mediator. The trek is every rainforest explorers dream - there is a 50km 'piste' from Boha to the Lac. It takes you through ancient untouched forests and a bugger of a swamp. WIldlife seems to gravitate to the lac, so if you've spent the entire trek staring at the ground to avoid the roots or searching for the lead porter, you're in for a treat when you arrive. Crocs, chimpanzees, gorillas, (and supposedly bonobo's) all live by the lac's banks which you can explore by foot or canoe. So a big thanks to Congo Travel and Tours who were accomodating to my needs and made thhe expedition possible! Cheers"
