Volcano Observatory Day Tour - Goma

Located in the town of Goma, on Mount Goma, is a Volcanic Observatory as well as a Risk Observatory for all natural disasters.

The Observatory has a hefty responsibility of monitoring the activity of Nyiragongo, which is about 20kms away from the observatory, and Nyamulagira. The observatory keeps an eye on all the activities of Nyiragongo, Nyamuragira and any other natural calamities of the region through their equipment and teams of scientists that visit the places on and off.

Along the banks of Lake Kivu, Nyiragongo is currently one of the most active volcanos on the continent! Nyiragongo is a very popular site to visit amongst travelers from all over wanting to see the worlds largest lava lake within the crater. The still very active volcano is infamously known for its 2002 eruption that left more than 100 people dead and hundreds of thousands fleeing.

As you explore the Observatory today, you will notice there is also a small museum within a conference room with walls filled with different maps and photographs and paintings of Goma and the eruption.

On your tour today, there is a great chance you will have the chance to meet with the Scientific Director himself - and he might even be your guide here. Today you will be guided through all the departments and introduced to the work that is done here.

This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Observatory. You will spend approximately one hour exploring and learning about the very important role that the observatory plays in protecting the people in the volcano's line of fire, as well as understanding the role it plays in keeping the international community informed of the volcano's status.

After the tour, you will be dropped back off at your accommodation in Goma.

Upon arrival, it is recommended, though not mandatory, for visitors to leave a donation. Your donation can be either monetary or in the form of equipment such as trekking shoes or gear.

The Observatory is open from Monday - Friday.

"Really great, thank you. Lots of Bonobos, everyone very friendly, all the transport etc ran smoothly. The base camp was very nice - all the guys there went out of their way to make us feel welcome and the trackers were accommodating and let us have as much time with the bonobos as we wanted. Michel was particularly lovely - very jolly! And we even learned how to stay balanced on the back of those motorbikes on the dirt roads (!) thanks also to Hades who kept me up to date each morning in Kinshasa with pick up times, driver names etc.

Thanks to you for organising it all for us^^ drc team is solidIt was really interesting to hear about all the projects happening, from partnerships with companies to the work diversifying food and income sources. Innocent was particularly passionate about the future for the villages and conservation efforts, and gave us lots of information. The boat sounds like a super project. It’s such a wonderful country, and it is a shame that so many people feel despondent about things (although I can see why they do). Hopefully there are enough people with vision to keep the progress going! It sounds like your team certainly has the passion and enthusiasm for development! We definitely got that impression from everyone we met.
